author Thomas Hardy
author2-role , "Includes a Modern Library reading group guide"--P. [4] of cover., "The Return of the Native" by Thomas Hardy is a tale set in Egdon Heath in the mid 1800s. A reddlemen, Mr. Wildeve is in love with Eustacia Vye but she is too busy trying to get the attention from Clym Yeobright who offers her the opportunity to escape., 'To be loved to madness - such was her great desire.' The Return of the Native is Hardy's most popular novel. Clym Yeobright is the "native" who returns to Egdon Heath from his studies in Paris. Clym is soon caught up in a troubled relationship with Eustacia Vye, a darkly complicated young woman who hopes to escape her dreary existence on the Heath for an exciting life in Paris. Several other characters as well are soon caught up in a web of deceit, misunderstanding, and misfortune, and the listener wonders which of them will manage to find happiness. The Return of the Native was filmed for television in 1994 starring Catherine Zeta Jones as Eustacia Vye, Clive Owen as Damon Wildeve, Ray Stevenson as Clym Yeobright, and Joan Plowright as Mrs. Yeobright. In 2010, an adaptation of The Return of the Native was directed by Ben Westbrook. It is set in the Appalachian Mountains in the 1930s during The Great Depression. The novel has also been adapted for the stage several times., (OCoLC)427435203, 00064719, 037575718X, 0486160343 (electronic bk.), 1 online resource, 1 online resource (1 audio file (13hr., 30 min.)) :digital., 1 online resource (1 audio file (13hr., 38 min.)) :digital., 1 online resource (1 audio file (14hr., 30 min.)) :digital., 1 online resource (1 audio file (14hr., 50 min.)) :digital., 1 online resource., 10077852Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 1040Lexile., 10755537Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11137460Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11352220Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11403588Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11462720Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11504176Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11583192Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11605009Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11620902Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11885784Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11908773Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 1400195071 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 1483063844 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 1504034597 (electronic bk.), 1518948472 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 1596256443 (electronic bk.), 162558718X (electronic bk.), 1632099063 (electronic bk.), 1681951754 (electronic bk.), 178000978X (electronic bk.), 184379814X (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 1910343897 (electronic bk.), 2001 Modern Library pbk. ed., 33021023164012BR04/26/20121FIC HARDYf, 33021023165324WF02/02/20121FIC HARDYf, 33021023165324aficFIC HARDYwf1115353af, 3782179132833741783TotalBooxwww.totalboox.com, 823.8, 823.89H 272re, 823/.8, 860757, 9780375757181, 9780486160344 (electronic bk.), 9781400195077 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9781483063843 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9781504034593, 9781504034593 (electronic bk.), 9781518948473 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9781596256446 (electronic bk.), 9781625587183 (electronic bk.), 9781632099068 (electronic bk.), 9781681951751 (electronic bk.), 9781780009780 (electronic bk.), 9781843798149 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9781910343890 (electronic bk.), A Greek Tragedy in Form of a 19th-century British Novel. 'Of love it may be said, the less earthly the less demonstrative. In its absolutely indestructible form it reaches a profundity in which all exhibition of itself is painful.' Edgon Heath is a mystical place where life is not at all ordinary and simple. It is also the stage where the tragedy in The Return of the Native unfolds. And like any classical tragedy, the action revolves around a woman, in this case goddess-like Eustacia Vye who searches for a way to escape the mundane. Through a series of vivid incidents and encounters, The Return of the Native moves in a relentless drive towards tragedy, as the plans and dreams of the lovers miscarry, defeated by chance, or destiny or self-deception. The fiery Eustacia Vye, wishing only for passionate love, believes that her escape from Egdon lies in her marriage to Clym Yeobright, the returning "native," home from Paris and discontented with his work there. Clym wishes to remain in Egdon, however-a desire that sets him in opposition to his wife and brings them both to despair. Surrounding them are Clym's mother, who is strongly opposed to his marriage; Damon Wildeve, who is in love with Eustacia but married to Clym's cousin Thomasin; and the oddly ambiguous observer Diggory Venn, whose frustrated love for Thomasin turns him into either a guardian angel or a jealous manipulator-or perhaps both. This stew of curdled love and conflicting emotions can only boil over into tragedy, and the book's darkly ironic ending marks it as both a classically Victorian novel and a forerunner of the modernist fiction that followed it., Open Road Media2016, PR4747.A1 2000, Parker, Agnes Miller,1895-1980,illustrator., Passionate Eustacia Vye detests her life amid the dreary environs of Egdon Heath and spies her escape when Clym Yeobright returns from Paris. Underlying these modern themes, however, is a classical sense of tragedy: Hardy scrupulously observes the three unities of time, place, and action and suggests that the struggles of those trying to escape their destinies will only hasten their destruction., The fates of two ill-matched couples intertwine in this poignant masterpiece from one of England's greatest novelists Eustacia Vye is as wild and beautiful as the landscape that surrounds her grandfather's house on Egdon Heath. Dark-haired, tempestuous, and haughty, she yearns to escape her rural corner of England, and believes that by marrying Clym Yeobright, a native of the heath just returned from Paris, she will find the romance and adventure her heart craves. But Clym's interests run in the opposite direction-toward comfort, community, and tradition-and the young couple's happy union soon turns miserable. When a former suitor pays a fateful visit, Eustacia must decide whether to break her vows to Clym or forego her exotic dreams forever. One of Thomas Hardy's most beloved novels, The Return of the Native brilliantly evokes the dangerous allure of romantic fantasies. Rich in mythological allusions yet grounded in the hard realities of nineteenth-century village life, it is one of the most heartbreaking tragedies ever told. Clym's character is contrasted by Eustacia Vye, a beautiful young woman who longs to escape Egdon Heath for a more glamorous life elsewhere. Hearing of Clym's return she pursues him with hopes of him taking her away to that more glamorous life which she seeks. A captivating novel of the Victorian era, Hardy's "The Return of the Native" dramatically underscores the idea that regardless of our desires, in the end we are truly helpless to escape our destiny., The novel takes place entirely in the environs of Egdon Heath, and, with the exception of the epilogue, covers exactly a year and a day. The narrative begins on the evening of Guy Fawkes Night as Diggory Venn drives slowly across the heath, carrying a hidden passenger in the back of his van. When darkness falls, the country folk light bonfires on the surrounding hills, emphasizing-not for the last time-the pagan spirit of the heath and its denizens., The return of the native, The return of the native /Thomas Hardy ; introduction by Alexander Theroux., The return of the nativeThomas Hardy., Thomas Hardy (2nd June 1840 - 11th January 1928), celebrated poet and writer, was born in a modest thatched cottage near Dorchester in the West country, to a builder father. His mother came from a line of intelligent, lively and ambitious women so ensured her son had the best formal education available for their modest means although this ended when he was 16. He became a draughtsman specialising in the building of churches was able to give it up to be a full time writer and poet with the publication of Far From the Madding Crown which became a bestseller and like much of his work was serialised. His writing reflects his passionate beliefs for social reform and exposes the hypocrisy of the rules of the Victorian age which constrained many freedoms with convention and restricted the transcending of class boundaries. His novels are almost entirely set in rural Wessex which although fictional is clearly rooted in the SW counties of England where he was born and lived most of his life. Hardy's writing caused controversy in his lifetime but despite this he was highly praised and showered with honorary doctorates from many universities, a knighthood, which he refused and in 1910 the prestigious Order of the Merit. Return of the Native opens with an evocative description of the bleak brooding Egdon Heath which is not only the setting for the book but also anticipates the dark tone of the novel. The native in the title is Clym Yeobright who is returning to the place where he grew up to settle and be a positive part of the community which was missing from his life in Paris. He falls in love with the tempestuous Eustacia Vye who dreams of passionate love and is dazzled by the idea of a life in Paris which would liberate her from the stifling claustrophobia she feels in Egdon. Marriage accentuates her restlessness and resolve to escape causing frustration, disappointment, betrayal and tragedy. Hardy provides a poetic compassion for both characters and creates powerful scenes heightening the dramatic tension and making this a special read., TotalBooxdistributor, Unabridged., Vance, Simon., Vendor-supplied metadata, Wessex (England), Witches, [United States]:A Word To The Wise ,2013., [United States]:Author's Republic ,2017., [United States]:Blackstone Audio, Inc. ,2006., [United States]:Dover Publications ,2012., [United States]:Interactive Media ,2014., [United States]:Naxos ,2014., [United States]:Neeland Media LLC,2010., [United States]:Open Road Media ,2016., [United States]:Start Publishing LLC ,2013., [United States]:Tantor Audio ,2010., [United States]:Trajectory, Inc. ,2014., [United States]:Xist Publishing ,2015., computerc, data file, digital, e-uk-en, eAudiobook hoopla, eBook hoopla, eng, hoopla digital., https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/aut_9781518948473_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/bsa_9781455100064_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/csp_9780486160344_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/csp_9781596256446_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/iam_9781910343890_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/nax_9781843798149_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/opr_9781504034593_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/sta_9781625587183_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/trj_9781632099068_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/ttm_9781400195077_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/vsa_9781780009780_180.jpeg, https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/xst_9781681951751_180.jpeg, online resourcecr, spoken wordspw, text file, texttxt, xiv, 426 p. :map ;21 cm.
