Description
The present paper is an attempt to formulate a positive theory of motivation which will satisfy these theoretical demands and at the same time conform to the known facts, clinical and observational as well as experimental. It derives most directly, however, from clinical experience. This theory is, I think, in the functionalist tradition of James and Dewey, and is fused with the holism of Wertheimer, Goldstein, and Gestalt Psychology, and with the dynamicism of Freud and Adler. This fusion or synthesis may arbitrarily be called a 'general-dynamic' theory. It is far easier to perceive and to criticize the aspects in motivation theory than to remedy them. Mostly this is because of the very serious lack of sound data in this area. I conceive this lack of sound facts to be due primarily to the absence of a valid theory of motivation. The present theory then must be considered to be a suggested program or framework for future research and must stand or fall, not so much on facts available or evidence presented, as upon researches to be done, researches suggested perhaps, by the questions raised in this paper.

author Forster, E. M. (Edward Morgan), 1879-1970,
author2-role , "Howards End" is E. M. Forster's classic story of the varying struggles of members of different strata of the English middle class. The story centers around three families; the Wilcoxes, who made their fortune in the American colonies; the Schlegels, three siblings who represent the intellectual bourgeoisie; and the Basts, a young struggling lower middle-class couple. "Howards End", one of Forster's greatest works, is a classic dramatization of the differences in life amongst the English middle class., 0486112292 (electronic bk.), 0679406689, 1 online resource, 1 online resource (1 audio file (11hr., 04 min.)) :digital., 1 online resource (1 audio file (12hr., 30 min.)) :digital., 1 online resource., 10078373Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 10757034Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11460716Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11463633Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11483333Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11602223Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11611252Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 11907942Midwest Tape, LLChttp://www.midwesttapes.com, 1400199433 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 1481597779 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 159625243X (electronic bk.), 1627933964 (electronic bk.), 1627938001 (electronic bk.), 178543411X (electronic bk.), 191055829X (electronic bk.), 3288282346415660863TotalBooxwww.totalboox.com, 33021021977514WF04/07/20111FIC FORSTERf, 33021021977514aficFIC FORSTERwf855175af, 33021023118422BR0FIC FORSTERf, 33021023118935NG0FIC FORSTERf, 33021023118935aficFIC FORSTERwf1115157af, 779195, 820Lexile., 823/.912, 91052997, 9780486112299 (electronic bk.), 9780679406686, 9781400199433 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9781481597777 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9781596252431 (electronic bk.), 9781627933964 (electronic bk.), 9781627938006 (electronic bk.), 9781785434112 (electronic bk.), 9781910558294 (electronic bk.), Audiobooks., Considered by many to be E. M. Forster's greatest novel, Howards End is a beautifully subtle tale of two very different families brought together by an unusual event. The Schlegels are intellectuals, devotees of art and literature. The Wilcoxes are practical and materialistic, leading lives of "telegrams and anger." When the elder Mrs. Wilcox dies and her family discovers she has left their country home-Howards End-to one of the Schlegel sisters, a crisis between the two families is precipitated that takes years to resolve.Written in 1910, Howards End is a symbolic exploration of the social, economic, and intellectual forces at work in England in the years preceding World War I, a time when vast social changes were occurring. In the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes, Forster perfectly embodies the competing idealism and materialism of the upper classes, while the conflict over the ownership of Howards End represents the struggle for possession of the country's future. Forster refuses to take sides in this conflict. Instead he poses one of the book's central questions: In a changing modern society, what should be the relation between the inner and outer life, between the world of the intellect and the world of business? Can they ever, as Forster urges, "only connect"?, Country homes, Crossley, Steven.|Narrator, DLCDLCOCoLCDLCOCoLCDLC, Digital content provided by hoopla., Domestic fiction., Dover thrift editions, Dover thrift editions., Electronic books., England, Everyman's library ;, FIC FORSTER, FICTION / Literary, Feedbooks1910, Forster, E. Through romantic entanglements, disappearing wills, and sudden tragedy, the conflict over the house emerges as a symbolic struggle for England's very future. The fate of this country home symbolizes the future of England in an exploration of social, economic, and philosophical trends during the post-Victorian era., The novel follows lives of three families in England at the beginning of the 20th century: the Wilcoxes, rich capitalists with a fortune made in the Colonies; the half German Schlegels, whose cultural pursuits have much in common with the real-life Bloomsbury Group; and the Basts, an impoverished young couple from a lower middle class background. The idealistically motivated, well read, highly intelligent Schlegel sisters seek to help the struggling Basts, wishing at the same time to rid the Wilcoxes of some of their deep-seated social and economic prejudices., The present paper is an attempt to formulate a positive theory of motivation which will satisfy these theoretical demands and at the same time conform to the known facts, clinical and observational as well as experimental. The fate of this beloved country home symbolizes the future of England itself in E. M.
